On the 26th of November, our club in conjunction with Leo Club of Chung Ling High School have successfully organised a two-day event, the first day was a heritage walk around Georgetown and the second day was a trip to Balik Pulau.

Georgetown, as the capital of Penang, is a city that bears a rich history with its well-preserved architecture and cultural traditions. In 2008, Georgetown along with Malacca, was recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage city. Taking a walk through the Penang Heritage Trail has indeed proved a wonderful experience for the members as they experienced the grandeur of the buildings which epitomize the various ethnicity who have lived in Penang over the past two hundred years.

On the 2nd day, we gathered at the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal and took off for Balik Pulau. Balik Pulau as mentioned in the history of Balik Pulau by the Heritage art ED of Penang means “the other side of the island”. The Chinese call it “the island behind the hills” as it bordered along the coastline on the western side and been protected by the high hills on three side.

Since he was 15, Chang Kun Mim's life has revolved around the nutmeg business. Started by his late father Chang Min Sin in 1953, it is now the largest producer of nutmeg products on the island.

Walk For Sight and Sound

The annual "Walk For Sight" was held on the 17th of July, organised by Lions Club of Georgetown Perdana 3rd year running. The 3.8km blind-folded walk was organised to raise funds for St. Nicholas Home as well as for Penang Deaf Association. It reminds us of how fortunate we are to have all the basic senses functioning well.

Region 1 Leo Clubs had a joint farewell on the 18th of June 2011 which was held at YMCA . This farewell was mainly for those outgoing Board of Directors in Region 1 Leo Clubs.

A short motivation talk from Leo Raissa Laurel, an inspiration to many. She was standing right in front of the bomb that exploded in La Salle University, Manila that resulted in the amputation of both her legs. She's back in action in less than a year because she BELIEVE in herself and her dreams

Our Leos went to the T.O.P project held by Georgetown Central at Komtar Walk on 18 July.
We had to arrive at 7, in the morning :(
We were put into groups to work as stationers and was situated at different places around Georgetown. Our job was to give out clues to the contestants so that they could finish their 10 stops. It was kinda similar to The Amazing Race.

Our sister Club, Leo Club of Han Chiang High School was also there.

Leo Idol Season 3!

THE NEW GAME PLAN

In a move to keep the LEO Idol franchise a more challenging and exciting one, we are twisting and bending all rules to keep the program fresh and exciting!

1) LEO Idol Season 3 is an - All Talent Show!

Any talents will be accepted, not just singing as we believe that one doesn’t have to be a singer to be an Idol! Categories include the following:

i) Singing (solo, duet or groups of 4)

ii) Dancing (solo, duet or groups of 4)

iii) Stand Up Comedian (solo)

iv) Music instrumentalist (solo, duet, triplet or quartet) on any musical instrument

v) Beat Boxing (solo)

v) Other categories (Magic Show, Mime, etc)

2) The selection process

This will not be like before where participants have to attend an audition round and the selected few to take part in the regional finals. In all preliminary rounds, the “Open Mic” system will be adopted. This is where all participants solo or group, will display their talents. They will be allowed to perform for 60 seconds and if the judges do not ring the bell, they will be allowed to complete their performance of not more than 5 minutes long.

Marks will be tabulated on the spot and the average mark for the participant will be displayed on screen. The best of 5 will go to Round 2 where they will be performing for the second time. Each of the 5 finalist will be allowed to complete their performance.

One will represent the respective regional prelimary round to the Inter-District LEO Idol finals in Kuala Lumpur in April.

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR ORGANIZERS OF REGIONAL PRELIMINARIES

1) Reporting and final decision

All arrangements must be made with approval from the Leo Idol Advisory Panel.

2) Paperwork

All paperwork must be CC-ed to Lion Alan Thoo and all branding must be observed and complied.

3) The selection process

One will represent the respective regional prelimary round to the Inter-District LEO Idol finals in Kuala Lumpur in April.

Expenses for travel incl insurance for the finalists will be absorbed by the Lions Club of Ipoh Metro N.C.

4) Judges

There must be ONE local Lions member to be in one of the panel of judges for the respective Regional Preliminaries. The rest comes from the Advisory Panel or a replacement who is appointed by the panel.

5) Expenses

Most venues in District 308B1 & B2 have been confirmed and paid for by sponsors unless stated. The respective Organizing Committee has to source for prizes that include Champion, 1st & 2nd Runners-Up and consolation prizes (if any). Prizes can come in the form of a combination of cash & prizes.

6) Charges for Participants

Not more than RM5.00 per solo participant and RM10.00 per group of a maximum of 4

7) Participants

Participants can take part as a soloist and again as a part of a group of 2-4. However, if both the acts end up as the Top 5 for Round 2, the particular participant who is in both acts has to give up on one.

20th was a big day for us.

It's our first time to organise such a big event.

Of course it's not easy for us and it's also not a huge success,

but at least we did our best and worked so hard to make this happened.

Through this event, we will invite live band, singers, dancers and many different performers to bring love to these orphans from Pusat Belia Bahnhof Pulau Pinang. Besides that, we are going to raise funds for them by selling stuff from the sponsorship. All the funds from sales will be fully donated to Pusat Belia Bahnhof Pulau Pinang. A Visit to 'The Little Sisters of the Poor'

Last Wednesday,

a few of our members made a visit to 'The Little Sisters of the Poor'

near to Chung Ling High School

with a few Anderson Leo, Lion Marcus from Ipoh,

and Jason (Chung Ling president), Emily (CDK president), Siew Ling (CDK secretary),

Boon Yan (Union president), Zhang Hao ( Penang City president) and Him Keat ( Penang City treasurer).

When we first walk in there, we got stunned by the big building. it is really really BIG! this building used up 24 millions!

They have lots of Catolic statues and sculpture.

And, we saw a lot of old peoples which live there for many years.

They look lonely. And although the whole building is spacious and has lots of facilities for the elders, but the whole building is very quiet. no laughter at all. The elders just carry out their routine action everyday : eat, walk around, watch TV, do exercise, sleep. They have lived there for many years and still going to stay there for the rest of their life.

Sometimes, a radio would be a good companion.

A sister is bringing us to visit the building.

Pei Cing with one of the grandma there. She's very cute. Pei Cing asked her if we can take picture with her, and she refused to because she said "I don't have any teeth left. I'm so ugly."

And we finally succeed in convincing her to take a photo.

Before joining the Go Green competition organised by Leo Club of Penang City,

the four of us ( Pei Cing, Cai Qian, Wan Pei and Yng Shin) went to McDonald to

discuss on what should we do.

Environmental Awareness Campaign.

LEO CLUB OF PENANG (CITY) is organizing an Environemntal Awareness Campaign with theme "Go Green Starts From Your Home" on 21st November 2009 @ Queensbay Mall, Penang with the support from Malaysian Celebrities Go Green.

A series of activities are planned for this campaign. They are:-

Recycling Items Design Competition.
Exhibitions by Jabatan Perhilitan Pulau Pinang & New Century Lions Club of Penang Island
Collecting Recyclable Items from Public
Meet Celebrity Judges from Malaysian Celebrities Go Green, Baki Zainal & Azizi Zakaria

Let's talk about the Recycling Items Design Competition, the details of the competition is as below:-

Date: 21st November 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 1pm (Registration), 2pm to 5pm (Competition)
Venue: Queensbay Mall, North Zone, Level 1 (Right in front of Maybank)
Admission: RM 20 (2 to 4 persons)

Term of Entry:

participant must register for participation before 1p.m. on the day of competition.
The competition is open to public. The organizing team members are not allowed to participate in the competition.
Participants are required to use recycle material such as, bottle, old clothing, and damaged item and transform them into useful household furniture and ornament. For example: furniture, closet, aquarium, piggy bank, clock, shoe rack, curtain and so on.
The competition is conducted in groups; each group consists of 2 to 4 people. Registration fee for each group is RM20.
All entries must be completed within the 3 hours time frame. All entries could be colored.
Upon completion all group are given 3 minutes to make a brief presentation regarding their work of art. Participants could choose among Chinese or English as medium.
Plagiarisms are strictly forbidden.
The organizing committee reserves the right to carry out an auction. Proceeds will be taken as donation for charity purposes. No objections should be made.
The judging panel members have final decision on the result of the contest.
The organizing team has the right to make any amendment on the rules and regulation of the competition.

THEME: ENERGIZE GROWTH

Registration fee for Leo is RM 100.00 per person register before 15th November 2009, including 2-nights accommodation based on shared room, 2(two) breakfasts, 3(three) lunches, 2(two) dinner, 2(two) suppers & Insurance coverage during the camp. The registration will be limited for 150 pax and based on first come first serve basis.

The objectives of this camp are:
• To create and foster a spirit of understanding amongst Leos in the District 308 B2
• To instill in Leo members the safety and appreciation of the environment
• To provide activities promoting teamwork, discipline, tolerance, independence and self-endurance
• To encourage sharing of ideas throughout the District 308 B2
• To develop leadership potential among Leos

Activities such as Cooking Competition, Team-building, Treasure Hunt and Fellowship will be further value-added with other camping skills sessions like the pitching of tents, selecting campsites, and starting a fire.

BY the time we reached the beach, everyone was tired and was sweating.

When all the Lions and Leos reached the beach,

we started our cleanup project.

First, we were given a data card

to record what we picked up.

Secondly, all the data cards had to be consolidated into a single card after cleaning up.

Then, we weighed all our trashes. and it's around 300 KG.

This project is held in conjunction with the annual international event coordinated by The Ocean Conservancy, the world’s largest one-day volunteer effort to cleanup beaches.

Before Cleanup Day: For Participants

Be Green

1) Leave natural items alone on the beach.

These include driftwood, shells and coral, dead fish and crabs, mangrove seeds and seaweed.

2) Don’t pluck vegetation and avoid stepping on beach grass/ plants.

These plants bind the sand and prevent erosion, and also provide wildlife with food and homes.

3) Recycle used plastic bags to hold trash.

Old bags can be used, instead of brand new trash bags.

4) Don’t litter.

You are there to help remove litter, not to add more litter.

5) Save a bottle.

Bring along your own refillable water bottle.

For Your Safety

1) Keep away from any oil drums found.

These may contain dangerous liquids or poisonous vapours. Just report the total number and any labels seen to the coordinator. We will alert NEA about disposal.

2) Broken glass, fishing hooks, syringes and other sharp objects.

They are common on beaches. Some fishes like the stingray have a sharp, poisonous spine.

3) Always use your gloves to pick up things.

4) Do not open any bottles you find; they may contain poison.

5) Take care of your back!

Have a friend to help you lift heavy things together. If it is too heavy, let it be!

6) Avoid bushy areas, as there may be hornet nests.

7) When there is lightning and thunder, stop work immediately and seek shelter.

8) Drink enough water to prevent heat stroke.

What to bring? What to wear?

1) Wear shoes. No Slippers or sandals.

2) Wear a cap and put on some sun-block lotion (> SPF 15).

3) Use insect repellent against mosquitoes and sandflies.

4) Bring along a poncho or raincoat.

After the cleanup, spread the word. Tell friends, teachers and family members about what you did and what you learned.

the field opposite General Hospital.

We had to attend the school for incoming key officer in the morning.

then we went to Sunshine Banquet Hall

for the Forum Closing Ceremony.

There's a talk about the Effective Microorganism.

and we had our lunch after that.

I forgot where they from. If I'm not mistaken, it should be SMK USJ 8 or USJ 13.
